Gambling revenue growth in Denmark

Growth and digitalization of the casino market in DenmarkAccording to data from the national regulator Spillemyndigheden, in July 2025 the total gambling revenue in Denmark increased by 12.8% year-on-year, reaching DKK 634 million (€84.6 million).

Online Casinos Remain the Main Growth Driver

Online casino revenue amounted to DKK 349 million, up 20.5% compared to the previous year. The majority of the income came from online slots — DKK 291.7 million, followed by blackjack (DKK 22.2 million) and roulette (DKK 16.8 million). According to the regulator, the share of online gambling in total revenue continues to grow, reflecting the shift of players toward the digital environment. The market channelization rate remains consistently high at around 91%.

Experts note that the growth dynamics of online casinos reflect a broader trend toward the digitalization of gambling in Scandinavia: users increasingly turn to mobile applications and prefer gaming platforms with quick registration and local payment solutions.

Sports Betting Is Recovering

The sports betting segment also showed signs of recovery after two months of decline — up by 6% to DKK 159 million. Nearly 75% of all bets were placed via mobile devices, highlighting the dominance of mobile betting in Denmark.

Key growth drivers include major international sports events such as the Olympics and football qualifying matches, which traditionally boost user engagement. Despite the positive trend, analysts expect that a possible tightening of advertising regulations could impact market volumes in the coming year.

Land-Based Segment Maintains Its Position

Revenue from gaming machines reached DKK 90 million, slightly below last year’s level. However, land-based casinos demonstrated growth of 18.8% (to DKK 33 million), indicating a gradual return of players to physical venues after the pandemic downturn.

In 2025, a new land-based bingo sector also emerged, generating DKK 2 million — still modest, but a promising segment with potential for growth within the social and recreational niche.

Responsible Gaming and Upcoming Reforms

According to the regulator, the national self-exclusion system ROFUS currently includes 62,577 registered individuals, about 65% of whom opted for a permanent ban. Interestingly, this figure is 170 fewer than the previous month — a signal that may indicate the effectiveness of preventive programs and changing attitudes toward responsible gambling behavior.

Minister of Taxation Rasmus Stoklund has proposed a package of reforms aimed at enhancing the industry’s social responsibility. Key initiatives include a ban on gambling advertising during sports broadcasts (the so-called “whistle-to-whistle ban”), similar to the UK model, and an increase in funding for support centers for problem gamblers.

Industry representatives have already expressed their readiness to cooperate with the government, noting that clear rules and support for responsible gambling contribute to the sustainable development of the market.

A Transparent and Mature Market

The Danish gambling market remains one of the most stable and well-regulated in Europe. The combination of online segment growth, high market channelization, and a strong focus on player protection makes it an example of balanced industry development amid increasing regulatory scrutiny.
